Get to Know the Holy Spirit

Galatians 4:6
“And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!””

Upon repentance and conversion to Jesus Christ, a person receives the Spirit of God as a proof that he or she belongs to God and a guarantee of his or her inheritance in God.
The Holy Spirit is not a force, nor a smoke. He is not a cloud, nor is He a light. He is not a thing; He is not a dove, He is not oil, nor water. All this are just symbols.

The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Godhead. He is the first to be named distinctly in Genesis. We read in Gen 1: 1-2 ,”In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”

The word ‘God’ in verses 1&2 is “Elohim” which in Hebrews is plural. But strangely the verb “created” is in singular. So, we are dealing with one God in three persons, and the first to be clearly named is the Holy Spirit. He was hovering over the face of the waters, preparing the earth for subsequent creations. Without the Holy Spirit, live and creation would have not been possible. But, the Holy Spirit is the least known person of the Godhead.

You will find out that many religions and denominations have been created around the Person and work of the Holy Spirit because many misunderstood Him.

  • The Muslims take Him to be Muhammed, and they claim He is the one Jesus promised was coming after Him.
  • Jehovah witnesses say, He is just a force, the breath of God and not God.
  • The Pentecostals emphasize on speaking in tongues after the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
  • The charismatics stresses the gifts and power of the Holy.
  • The prophetic movement capitalizes on the gift of prophecy.

What about the Baptists, the Catholic?. Understand that the Holy Spirit is bigger than a person can claim to fully know Him. His primary purpose is to identify us as sons of God and to constantly connect us with the Father. Listen, Paul wrote, “And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!””

The Spirit enables us to relate with God as our Father. He is the Spirit of sonship. We are adopted into God’s family. You need to know more about Him and His work in and through you.
Tomorrow, we shall find out more.
