Lift up Your Eyes to the Lord

Psalms 121:1-2
​I will lift up my eyes to the hills from whence comes my help? My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth.

From where can you get unfailing help? The Psalmist lifted up his eyes to the hills. Why the hills? Jerusalem was surrounded by hills. And those hills provided a geographical and natural security to the city and its people. The hills was a physical obstacle to the enemy nations that constantly planned and sought to invade the city. And so, the hills were a kind of security to the people. But family, Jerusalem was invaded and destroyed because physical and natural protections or help are not enough.

So, as we read carefully, we notice that the Psalmist removes his confidence from the hills and places it in God. He asked; “From whence comes my help?”

Beloved, from where comes your help?

It is from man? institutions? parents? children? Those are physical hills. There are seven pillars that make up a society. Those pillars are also called mountains or hills. They are: family, religion, government, business, education, art and entertainment, media (social or mass). Our help cannot come from these, but from the Lord.

The Psalmist answered and said, “My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth.” He makes a precision about the Lord he is talking about. He does not want a confusion with other gods. He is clear about the Lord who made the heaven and the earth. He is the Lord who can help us.

Beloved, our help cannot come from the hills or the mountains, but from the Lord. Call upon Him. Seek Him. Pray to him and wait on Him.

The Lord is a present help in times of need. He is the lifter of men. The burden carrier. The yoke breaker.

Prayer:
Let us finish the Psalm aloud, V3-8:

He will not allow my foot to be moved;
He who keeps me will not slumber.
Behold, He who keeps Israel
Shall neither slumber nor sleep.
The LORD is my keeper;
The LORD is my shade at my right hand.
The sun shall not strike me by day,
Nor the moon by night.
The LORD shall preserve me from all evil;
He shall preserve my soul.
The LORD shall preserve my going out and my coming in
From this time forth, and even forevermore.
