Be the Light in the Darkness
We are living in the last days. We can see the perilous and dark times that we are living in. The Apostle Paul described the last days in 2 Timothy 3:1-5. He said, “But understand this, that in the last days will come (set in) perilous times of great stress and trouble (hard to deal with and hard to bear). For people will be lovers of self and (utterly) self-centered, lovers of money and aroused by an inordinate (greedy) desire for wealth, proud and arrogant and contemptuous boasters. They will be abusive (blasphemous, scoffing), disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy and profane. They will be without natural human affection (callous and inhuman), relentless (admitting of no truce or appeasement); they will be slanders (false accusers, troublemakers), intemperate and loose in morals and conduct, uncontrolled and fierce, haters of good. They will be treacherous (betrayers), rash, and inflated with self-conceit. They will be lovers of sensual pleasures and vain amusements more than and rather than lovers of God. For although they hold a form of piety (true religion), they deny and reject and are strangers to the power of it (their conduct belies the genuineness of their profession). Avoid all such people (turn away from them),” (AMPC).
However, while there is much darkness around us, Jesus has called us to be the light in the darkness. Light exposes that which is hidden in darkness and shows things as they really are. Light also dispels darkness. Whenever a light appears into a dark room, darkness disappears. John 1:5 says, “And the Light shines on in the darkness, for the darkness has never overpowered it (put it out or absorbed t or appropriated it, and is unreceptive to it),” (AMPC).

Jesus is the Light of the world. Zachariah prophesied that Jesus was the Light coming into the world. In Luke 1:78-79, He said, “Because of and through the heart of tender mercy and loving-kindness of our God, a Light from on high will dawn upon us and visit us. To shine upon and give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to direct and guide our feet in a straight line into the way of peace, (AMPC). Jesus also described himself as the Light of the world. He said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life,” (NIV).
Since we as believers have received Jesus, He has called us to be his ambassadors, his hands, feet and voice in the earth. He encourages us in Matthew 5:14-16, “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven,” (NIV).
Let us be the light of the world that shines in the darkness all around us. Let us shine the light of love, joy and peace in the darkness of hatred, depression, and conflict. Let us shine the light of humility, unity, and reconciliation in the darkness of pride, division, and discord. Let us shine the light of gratitude, kindness, and forgiveness in the darkness of ingratitude, unkindness, and unforgiveness. Let us shine the light of blessing each other in the darkness of cursing and slander. Let us shine the light of faith and trust in God in the darkness of worry, fear, and anxiety.
God has called us to be the light in the darkness. When we obey our Heavenly Father, He will be pleased with us. We will bring much joy to Him and to each other. We will dispel the darkness and God’s Light, Glory, and His Presence will shine and be among us.
