Resolve to Remember the Danger of Wealth

Deuteronomy 8:11-19
"11 Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. 12 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, 13 and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 17 You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” 18 But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today. 19 If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed".

God warned Israel not to see success and victory over their enemies as achievements by their prowess and bravery. They should always acknowledge Him as their Helper and Provider. When God, the source of blessing and prosperity is forgotten, success can:

  1. Make people proud; and
  2. They forget where they are coming from – humble and even slave-like background;
  3. Open them up to hear many voices and see doors for ungodly means to amass more.

How many of us are moving in the black car uniform who may just be going to church, may not be going there but barely drop off family members and give reasons for staying away?

God warned Israel

We should learn from their warning and management our achievements as stewards of God’s goodness. You can cry out to God for mercy if you so need.

Thank you Lord for this warning, when you prosper us. Hear the cry of my brother/sister for mercy in repentance who has gone astray. May the gods of this age not ever mislead any of us while our blessings are flowing on us. In Jesus’ mighty name! Amen.
